PM assures action on farmers issues

New Delhi, Mar 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday promised to take up issues faced by farmers in country with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar right after the Budget Session of the Indian Parliament.
A delegation from Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) met with the PM on Tuesday to raise issues including remunerative prices for farm produce, amendment to the Land Acquisition Act, interest rates, that they said were troubling farmers countrywide.
Implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism, due consideration of sensitivities about genetically modified crops, health insurance for farmers, and a separate budget for agriculture were also among the discussions.
The Prime Minister said that the government was deeply concerned for farmers welfare and assured that farmers' interests are paramount and will be fully protected at all times.
He also assured that every year, before the budget, the government will bring out a report on the state of Indian agriculture.
The government had already enhanced MSPs very substantially over the past 5-6 years. It will continue to strive to protect farmers' interests through the MSP mechanism, Singh said.
Regarding land acquisition, a separate meeting will be organised with Ministry of Rural Development and farmers' organisations, he said.
The Prime Minister announced that he will convene a joint meeting with the Finance Minister and the Agriculture Minister to have an in-depth discussion on the various issues raised by BKU just after the current budget session..
